Pat says she was horse crazy from the start, and would go along with her grandfather who was a blacksmith so that when done working on a horse, he'd place her on its back.  She tells a story of how later when she received a bicycle for her birthday, she'd ride down to her friends and trade the bike for a ride on the friends pony.

Early on she met Don Long, and after much "horse talk" and several missed subsequent dates (he kept leaving messages for her with her grandmother who neglected to pass them along) they were able to make a connection, finally marrying in 1950.

They set about looking for horses (that was the one "non-negotiable" thing about the union), and while owning a various collection of nice animals they ended up at what was then "The National" and it was after seeing Townshend Cornita that Pat thought..."that's it, that's what I'm looking for."  Listen to Pat talk about that fateful day here...
