Posted 2008, Revised 2009

This past year, we were proud to host our 20th New York State Morgan Horse Society Stallion Service Auction.  The event broke all previous records for bids, and as always it was a wonderful opportunity for those in our Morgan community to join together in a night of excitement and fun.  To keep tabs on the Auction you'll want to go to the official NYSMHS Stallion Service Auction site which is
nymorganstallions.com.

This offering on the nysmhs.org web is intended to share with you the Auction's history including photos of all past Stallions featured in our Auction (included those added for 2009)  as well as those of our Breeder's Sweepstakes winners by year.

Please note that if you are one of the stallion owners, we welcome the substitution of images for any that we've shown, or if you desire that your stallion is not shown you can contact us by sending email to this link.

And for those that have donated Stallions or bid on Stallions we want to say "Thank You" and we appreciate your support.  It's also important that we thank all of those that have served on SSA Committee both past and present or that have helped with this activity.  It's a tremendous amount of work and you've done a spectacular job.

Our first auction (click on invitation to view the full page Advertisement for the Auction) was in 1989 at the De-Carlo Staffo Post in Little Falls, NY.  Many of us that attended remember bringing a dish to pass!  In 1998 it was moved to the Holiday Inn in Syracuse, NY and then in 2004 to Saratoga Springs where it's currently held each year.

An overview of the Auction's History, written by Diane Garrow and presented by Bob Marshall is available here by clicking on this link.

Over the years we've grown significantly and the Auction now delivers quality offerings to those that bid and funds a very attractive series of Breeder's Sweepstakes Classes at our Annual New York Regional Show.

To better understand how the Auction and the Breeder's Sweepstakes relate to each other,  as noted in our club yearbook:

"All the proceeds of this auction, after deductions to cover expenses, will be applied as prize money for special NYSMHS S.S.A. Sweepstakes classes at the NYS Morgan Horse Show.  This results in a 100% payback of all funds.  Each year, one-forth of the money raised at that year's Auction will be applied to a weanling "Sweepstakes" class at that year's NY Morgan Regional show in September.  Then three fourths of the money raised at that same year's Auction will be applied to two classes - a Park/Pleasure Saddle class and a Hunter/Western Pleasure Class at the NY Regional show when that year's offspring are showing as four year olds."

So if Stallion X is auctioned off and paid for at that year's auction, then any of his offspring that are weanlings are able to participate in the Weanling Sweepstakes class that year, as well as becoming eligible for one of the Sweepstakes Pleasure classes as a four year old.

As noted on the nymorganstallions website:

"From a first payout of $5000 in 1989 for the two NY SSA Sweepstakes Classes, to the payout of over $29,000 in the three Sweepstakes Classes at the ’08 New York State Morgan Horse Show. In total, the proceeds collected from the 1989 auction through the 2006 event are in excess of $450,000! To date - actual payouts of over $250,000 have gone to the Sweepstakes ribbon winners. The highest total for the history of the Auction to date is just under $70,000 in year 2008."

So it's an exciting event from start to finish and we're thrilled continue to see growth not only in the number of quality Stallions offered at each year's Auction (and the prize money it generates), but in the depth of Sweepstakes classes at our annual show.
