"Mary and George Arnold have been horsemen all their lives.  Before they bought their first registered Morgan in 1943, they owned and showed many horses of other breeding.  George Arnold, a breeder of Holstein cattle and a field supervisor for the Soil Conservation Services, was for many years an active participant in gymkhana events.  Among the many grade horses owned and shown by the Arnolds, one stood out.  Her name was Beth, and she was a Morgan-Standardbred cross.  Purchased by Mary Arnold in 1934, Beth was so elegant and showy under saddle that she and Mary were in great demand to lead parades in many communities all over Steuben, Yates, and Wayne counties.

It was this part-Morgan mare that aroused Mary's interest in the breed, and she determined that someday she would own a registered Morgan.  Her opportunity came in 1943 when she read an advertisement in a farm paper, offering several young Morgans for sale.  And so, sight unseen, she bought her first purebred Morgan.  He was a yearling stallion, Townshend John, by John A. Darling out of Bunting, bred by Anna Ela.  Townshend John sired a number of good Morgan type foals from grade mares during the years that Mary Arnold owned him."
