By 14 years of age and after many hours in the saddle, Childs had developed a reputation for having a good set of hands. During a visit to a Vermont show with her grandparents, Childs met Grace Brunk Woods who at that time worked at Upwey Farms. Grace convinced the Upwey trainer, A. G. Wilder, to loan her a Morgan to take into an equitation class. In 1938 at a show in Vermont, Ms. Woods introduced Childs to Clarence Atwood from Hartland, Vermont.

Follow this link to listen to Mrs. Childs tell the story of how she got involved with horses in her own words.....

If you were to ask Childs to name the one horse on which she had the best ride, without a moment’s hesitation she’d name Lippitt Bundy Ash, Mr. Atwood’s Morgan stallion.

Listen to Mrs. Childs talk about Lippitt Bundy Ash...

During this time, Childs could also be seen showing Upway Cassandra and Comrade for Mr. Atwood.
