At 16 years of age, Childs started writing a
horse column for the Springfield Daily News. This was the
beginning of what was to become another major part of her life.
After high school graduation Childs was offered two scholarships,
but it was when the President of the Vermont Junior College promised
that she could walk from the college to the Montpelier Riding Club
and exercise privately-owned horses, her decision was made. She
continued her education in Montpelier, graduating two years later. Here, Mrs. Childs talks about the decision to attend Vermont Junior College... During World War II, she and her father and an old horseman, visited the Green Mountain Stock Farm in Vermont, the home of Robert Knight and the Lippitt Morgan horses. There she met and rode a horse she describes as a "gorgeous mare." She remembers "She had so much action…but there was no way you could buy her." That mare was Lippitt Kate Moro and of her Childs remarks "Name the two great ones (meaning the mares) and they’re both out of Lippitt Kate Moro."
While vacationing with friends in Vermont in 1943, Childs seriously considered purchasing a Thoroughbred hunter by the name of Lucky Dice. She called her mother to tell her that she was quite "taken" by this mare. Looking back, Childs remarks "My mother was quite wise." Her mother said, "I’ve listened to you talk for the past several years about how you want a Morgan because you can show, trail ride and do just about anything you want with them…you better think twice before changing your mind." She advised her daughter to go back and look at the young Morgan stud colt out of Lippitt Kate Moro before making any decisions.
