And so it was that in 1943 Childs revisited the
Green Mountain Stock Farm with a friend who brought his trailer. The
friend loaned her $450.00 and Lippitt Mandate was hers. "Mandy," as
Childs called him, was just three years old and had no formal
training. As an interesting aside, when she originally considered Lippitt Mandate he wasn't recommended to her. Joe Boulris, the Green Mountain trainer, noted that he’d had more trouble with him than any of the other stallions. A wise old trainer that Childs and her father had with them that day quietly confided that he felt that Childs and Lippitt Mandate would work well with each other. Listen to Mrs. Childs tell the story of acquiring Lippitt Mandate
Another interesting note shared by Childs was that at that time you couldn't buy a mare. She remarks that "no amount of money would buy a mare, but you could buy a stallion." Later Mr. Knight would not sell his prized driving horse, Lippitt Ethan Ash, but Childs remembers that at the time she purchased Lippitt Mandate she could have bought either Morgan and that Mr. Knight had asked "Would you like to buy both?"
Childs shared a few more memories of the Green Mountain Stock Farm. Of the trainer, Joe Boulris and of Mr. Knight's arrangement with the Government to swap breedings. Listen to her comments here...
