Here's a bit of history that is of real
interest...Upwey Ben Don was originally bred by Owen Moon of
Vermont. In July of 1944 he was sold to Wesley Nieman, Rome, New
York, and then in January of 1946 sold again to Tina Wood of
Bouckville, New York. During his time with the Woods, and just prior to being sold to Ted Davis (February of 1947), Upwey Ben Don sired his first two foals, a gelding – Coca Cola, and a colt – purchased and named by the Rodee’s “Brown Pepper.” At that point there must have been a plan to start some breeding, as Wally registered the word “Pepper” (suffix only) with The Morgan Horse Club. Here's a photo of a very young Brown Pepper with Robert Rodee, Wally's father.
Brown Pepper was
out of Seneca Lady Ester and her breeding was Cornwallis x Betsy
Ross. To really get a good feel for Brown Pepper you’ve got to talk
with Bob Brooks. At the time that their paths crossed, Bob was a
young man in Geneva, NY and it was 1951. |

Listen to what Bob says about the first time he met Wally and became Peppers trainer. *Note - this file is large, so please be patient when loading (but it's worth it!) |
